Statfjord field life extended significantly
09 Jan 2020

Spirit Energy and its partners in the Statfjord area plan to drill up to 100 new wells and extend production by more than 10 years. Previous plans to decommission Statfjord A in 2022 have been shelved to extract even more value from the field.

Extensive mapping of the subsurface has revealed that the remaining potential of the Statfjord area is considerable, with Spirit Energy and its partners agreeing on a new and ambitious business plan for the area.

Statfjord A was scheduled for decommissioning in 2022, however, the field life will now be extended to 2027. The lives of Statfjord B and C will be extended towards 2040.

Dag Omre, Managing Director of Spirit Energy Norway, said: “We’ve been partner at Statfjord for more than 10 years now and still see great potential in the field – that’s why we’ve been working purposefully to identify new opportunities. It’s a fantastic achievement that the partnership has decided to drill a number of new wells to maximise output and secure a high activity level for many additional years at one of the true giants of the North Sea.”

100 new wells

The new plan includes drilling up to 100 new wells towards 2030. These wells will help reach an ambition of maintaining the current production level from Statfjord beyond 2025. This will require considerable investment and upgrading of the three platforms at the field.

In order to strengthen the Statfjord field, the operations will be reorganised, with a new late life unit established at operator, Equinor. This unit will develop new ways of working for safe and efficient operations with low carbon emissions from late life fields on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

Dag said: “We hold a 34% share in Statfjord and it’s a cornerstone asset in our portfolio. Credit goes to our Spirit Energy Statfjord team and the licence partners that have believed in the opportunities, worked hard together and have now landed a project that will create many jobs and great value for many years to come.”

The partnership in the Statfjord Area includes Spirit Energy, Vår Energi, Petoro, Idemitsu Petroleum Norway and Wintershall Dea Norge. Equinor Energy is operator.
